Théorème des 4 sommets

Théorème : Soit $(I,f)$ un arc paramétré de classe $C^2$ fermé et simple, et soit $\gamma:I\to\mathbb R$ sa courbure. Alors il existe au moins quatre points de $(I,f)$ pour lesquels $\gamma$ admet un extrémum local.
  Les points d'un arc paramétré où la courbure admet un extrémum local sont appelés les sommets de l'arc. Le théorème précédent dit que toute courbe simple fermée admet au moins 4 sommets.

Exemples :
  • l'ellipse $\frac{x^2}{a^2}+\frac{y^2}{b^2}=1$, avec $a\neq b$, admet exactement 4 sommets : les points $(\pm a,0)$, $(0,\pm b)$.
  • en tout point d'un cercle la courbure est constante, et donc tous les points d'un cercle en sont ses sommets.
