Méthodes de Newton-Cotes

Dans les méthodes d'intégration numérique, pour calculer $\int_a^b f(t)dt,$ on commence en général par subdiviser le segment $[a,b]$ en $N$ intervalles $[a_i,a_{i+1}]$, et on approche ensuite $\displaystyle \int_{a_i}^{a_{i+1}}f(t)dt.$ Le cas particulier d'une méthode de Newton-Cotes d'ordre $\ell$ est le suivant :

  • les segments $[a_i,a_{i+1}]$ ont tous la même longueur, $(b-a)/N$.
  • $\displaystyle \int_{a_i}^{a_{i+1}}f(t)dt$ est approché par $\displaystyle \int_{a_i}^{a_{i+1}}P(t)dt,$ où $P$ est un polynôme de degré $\ell$ qui coïncide avec $f$ aux points $a_i,$ $a_i+\frac{a_{i+1}-a_i}\ell,$ $a_i+2\frac{a_{i+1}-a_i}{\ell},$ ..., $a_{i+1}.$
Ainsi,
  • pour $\ell=1,$ on retrouve la méthode des trapèzes.
  • pour $\ell=2,$ on obtient la méthode de Simpson.
  • pour $\ell=4,$ on obtient la méthode de Boole-Villarceau.
  • pour $\ell=8,$ on obtient la méthode de Weddle-Hardy.

En règle générale, toutefois, pour obtenir un algorithme efficace, on préfère augmenter le nombre de fois où on coupe l'intervalle plutôt que l'ordre de la méthode.
