Repère de Serret-Frénet

Cas des courbes dans un plan

On considère un arc orienté $(I,f)$ de classe $\mathcal C^1$ régulier (ie $f'$ n'est jamais nul). En chaque point $M=f(t),$ l'arc possède donc une tangente dont un vecteur directeur est $f'(t).$ On note $$\overrightarrow{T(t)}=\frac{f'(t)}{\|f'(t)\|}$$ qui est le vecteur unitaire de la tangente orienté "dans le sens des $t$ croissants".

On note par ailleurs $\overrightarrow{N(t)}$ le vecteur obtenu en appliquant une rotation d'angle $\pi/2$ à $\overrightarrow{T(t)}.$ Alors, le repère $(M(t),\overrightarrow{T(t)},\overrightarrow{N(t)})$ est appelé repère de Frénet, ou repère de Serret-Frénet, ou base mobile, de l'arc au point $M(t).$

Le repère de Frénet est notamment utile pour définir la courbure d'un arc paramétré, qui est le réel $c$ défini par $$\frac{d\overrightarrow{T}}{ds}=c\overrightarrow{N}$$ lorsque l'arc est paramétré par l'abscisse curviligne.

Cas des courbes dans l'espace

On considère un arc de l'espace $(I,f)$ de classe $\mathcal C^2$ birégulier. On définit les trois vecteurs suivants : \begin{eqnarray*} \overrightarrow{T(t)}&=&\frac{f'(t)}{\|f'(t)\|}\\ \overrightarrow{N(t)}&=&\frac{f''(t)}{\|f''(t)\|}\\ \overrightarrow{B(t)}&=&\overrightarrow{T(t)}\wedge \overrightarrow{N(t)}. \end{eqnarray*} Alors, le repère $(M(t),\overrightarrow{T(t)},\overrightarrow{N(t)},\overrightarrow{B(t)})$ est appelé repère de Frénet de l'arc au point $M(t).$ Il est utile pour définir la torsion de l'arc paramétré, qui est le réel $\tau$ tel que $$\frac{d\overrightarrow{B}}{ds}=\tau \overrightarrow{N(s)}$$ lorsque l'arc est paramétré par abscisse curviligne.

Avec les définitions précédentes, le vecteur $\overrightarrow{T(t)}$ s'appelle le vecteur tangent à l'arc en $M(t)$, le vecteur $\overrightarrow{N(t)}$ s'appelle le vecteur normal principal, et $B(t)$ s'appelle le vecteur binormal.
