Endomorphisme autoadjoint

Définition : Soit $E$ un espace vectoriel euclidien ou hermitien, et $u$ un endomorphisme de $E$. On dit que $u$ est autoadjoint si $u=u^*$, c'est-à-dire si $$\forall (x,y)\in E^2, \langle x,u(y)\rangle=\langle u(x),y\rangle.$$

Si l'espace vectoriel est euclidien, on parle aussi d'endomorphisme symétrique, et si l'espace vectoriel est hermitien, on parle d'endomorphisme hermitien D'ailleurs, la matrice d'un endomorphisme autoadjoint dans une base orthonormale est symétrique (ou hermitienne si le corps de base est $\mathbb C$).

Le théorème suivant caractérise les endomorphismes autoadjoints.

Théorème : Soit $E$ un espace vectoriel euclidien ou hermitien, et $u$ un endomorphisme de $E$. Alors $u$ est autoadjoint si et seulement s'il existe une base orthonormée de $E$ de vecteurs propres pour $u$, les valeurs propres étant réelles.
