Correction de Sheppard

La correction de Sheppard est une correction pour débiaiser le calcul d'une variance empirique d'un échantillon dont les valeurs ont été regroupées par classe. On suppose donc qu'on a $k$ classes d'observation $]a_i,a_{i+1}]$, l'amplitude $a_{i+1}-a_i$ des classes étant constante égale à $a.$ On note $n_i$ l'effectif de la classe $]a_i,a_{i+1}],$ $m$ la moyenne observée et $c_i$ le centre de la classe $]a_i,a_{i+1}]$, c'est-à-dire $c_i=(a_i+a_{i+1})/2.$ L'estimation classique de la variance est donnée par $$V=\sum_{j=1}^k \frac{n_j}{n-1}(c_j-m)^2.$$ Cette estimation est légèrement biaisée. La correction de Sheppard consiste à remplacer cet estimateur par $$V-\frac{a^2}{12},$$ qui est une estimation non biaisée. Plus généralement, on peut débiaiser les autres moments des variables aléatoiress. Les termes correctifs font intervenir les nombres de Bernoulli.
