Les Mathematische Annalen sont un journal de mathématiques allemand créé en 1868 par
Alfred Clebsch et Carl Neumann. C'est sous la direction de Félix Klein, à la fin du XIXè siècle, que le journal prend
son véritable essor, et surpasse alors son rival germanique, le Journal de Crelle. Klein donne aux Mathematische Annalen
le fonctionnement moderne d'un journal de mathématiques : il réunit une petite équipe d'éditeurs, qui envoient les articles à des rapporteurs.
Les éditeurs se réunissent régulièrement et prennent des décisions démocratiques concernant la parution, ou non, des articles.
À cette époque, le journal se spécialise dans l'analyse complexe, la géométrie algébrique et la théorie des groupes.
À la suite de Klein, les éditeurs en chef des Mathematische Annalen seront David Hilbert, Otto Blumenthal, Erich Hecke, Heinrich Behnke, Hans Grauert, Heinz Bauer, Herbert Amann, Jean-Pierre Bourguignon, Wolfgang Lück et Nigel Hitchin. Ce journal est encore publié de nos jours, et reste un
journal très prestigieux. Il se présente comme un journal non spécialisé qui couvre tous les domaines des mathématiques.
