Ensemble convexe

Une partie $C$ de $\mathbb R^n$ est dite convexe si, pour tout couple $(x,y)$ d'éléments de $C$, le segment $[x,y]$ est entièrement contenu dans $C$. Autrement dit, $C$ est convexe lorsque pour tous $x,y\in C$ et tout $\lambda\in [0,1]$, $\lambda x+(1-\lambda)y\in C$.

Plus généralement, on peut définir de la même façon une partie convexe d'un espace vectoriel ou même d'un espace affine. On obtient alors des exemples classiques de parties convexes :

  • tout sous-espace vectoriel d'un espace vectoriel est convexe; tout sous-espace affine d'un espace affine est convexe.
  • toute boule (ouverte ou fermée) d'un espace vectoriel normé est convexe;
  • les parties convexes de $\mathbb R$ sont les intervalles.
Proposition : L'intersection d'une famille quelconque de convexes est convexe.
