Point adhérent et adhérence


Soit $E$ un espace métrique, $A$ une partie non vide de $E$, et $a$ un élément de $E$. On dit que le point $a$ est adhérent à $A$ dans $E$ si toute boule centrée en $a$ possède un point dans $A$. Avec des notations mathématiques : $$\forall r>0,\ B(a,r)\cap A\neq\varnothing.$$

Il existe une caractérisation des points adhérents fort pratique.

Théorème : Soient $E$ un espace métrique, $A$ une partie de $E$ et $a$ un élément de $E$. Alors $a$ est adhérent à $A$ si, et seulement si, il existe une suite $(u_n)$ de points de $A$ qui converge vers $a$.

L'adhérence d'un ensemble $A$ est l'ensemble des points adhérents à $A$. On peut aussi la définir (c'est équivalent) comme le plus petit fermé contenant $A$. Classiquement, l'adhérence de $A$ est notée $\bar A$.
