Rudolf Lipschitz (14 mai 1832 [Königsberg] - 7 octobre 1903 [Bonn])

Rudolf Lipschitz est né le 14 mai 1832 à Königsberg, dans une famille de riches propriétaires terriens. Très jeune, il étudie à l'Université de Königsberg, où il suit notamment les cours de Franz Neumann, puis, comme il est de coutume à cette époque, il complète sa formation dans une autre université, à Berlin, où domine la figure de Dirichlet. Des problèmes de santé l'obligent à interrompre ses études pendant un an; il termine son doctorat en 1853. Il doit attendre 1857 et enseigner entretemps au lycée avant d'obtenir un poste à l'université de Berlin. Il enseigne ensuite deux ans à l'Université de Breslau, avant de s'installer définitivement à Bonn en 1864. Il y assiste aux débuts de Félix Klein.

La production mathématique de Lipschitz est extrêmement variée. Il est surtout célèbre pour son amélioration des conditions de Cauchy concernant l'existence et l'unicité des solutions d'une équation différentielle, introduisant à cette occasion les fonctions qui portent son nom. Il était également un spécialiste de la géométrie différentielle introduite par Riemann, et il chercha notamment des invariants sur les surfaces par changements de coordonnées. On lui doit aussi des travaux en théorie algébrique des nombres, ou encore en mécanique classique.
