Hermann Hankel (14 février 1839 [Halle] - 29 août 1873 [Schramberg])

Hermann Hankel est un mathématicien allemand du XIXè siècle. Il est le fils de Wilhelm Gottlieb Hankel. Après des études au lycée de Leipzig, où il perfectionne son grec en lisant les textes des anciens mathématiciens en version originale, il devient étudiant à l'Université de Leipzig où il suit des cours de Möbius et de son père. Comme il est d'usage à l'époque en Allemagne, il fréquente plusieurs universités, et étudie ensuite à Göttingen où est Riemann, puis à Berlin où il travaille avec Weierstrass et Kronecker.

En 1862, Hankel soutient sa thèse de doctorat, intitulée Über eine besondere Classe der symmetrischen Determinanten (c'est-à-dire Sur une classe particulière de déterminants symétriques), puis son habilitation en 1863. Il enseigne alors à l'Université de Leipzig, y obtient un poste permanent au printemps 1867, mais quitte ce poste à l'automne 1867 pour un emploi à l'Université d'Erlangen. À Erlangen, il épouse Marie Dippe, mais quitte rapidement Erlangen pour Tübingen, où il obtient une chaire.

Les travaux de Hankel portent sur l'algèbre linéaire, suivant en cela les travaux de Grassman, l'intégration, où il est un précurseur de la théorie de la mesure, les fonctions d'une variable complexe, et les fonctions spéciales. Il s'est beaucoup investi dans son enseignement, et a également travaillé sur l'histoire des mathématiques. Il n'a pu mener jusqu'à son terme la réalisation d'un ouvrage consacré à ce thème : il est en effet atteint d'une méningite à l'été 1872 qui l'affaiblit énormément, et décède en 1873 des suites d'un accident vasculaire cérébral lors d'un voyage de vacances en Forêt noire.
