John Charles Fields (14 mai 1863 [Hamilton, Canada] - 9 août 1932 [Toronto])

John Charles Fields, né à Hamilton, fut professeur à l'Université de Toronto, ville où il décède en 1932. On lui doit quelques travaux sur les fonctions de la variable complexe. Son nom est surtout attaché à la Médaille Fields, qui fut créée en 1936, suite à un désir posthume de Fields, et à un legs qu'il laissa.

Il n'existe pas de Prix Nobel pour les Mathématiques. La petite histoire raconte que la cause en est une rivalité amoureuse entre le célèbre chimiste Alfred Nobel et le mathématicien Mittag-Leffler [mais d'autres sources démentent cela vigoureusement : Nobel n'aurait même pas été marié!]. La médaille Fields se veut la plus haute distinction mathématiques. Elle est décernée, tous les 4 ans, à des mathématiciens âgés de moins de 40 ans, pour leurs recherches brillantes. Le jury se compose de huit membres, élus par l'Union internationale de mathématiques, mais qui demeurent inconnus des participants jusqu'à l'attribution des prix. Les lauréats reçoivent 15000 $ canadiens ainsi qu'une médaille en or représentant au recto l'effigie d'Archimède et, au verso, une sphère inscrite dans un cylindre, tout comme sur la tombe du mathématicien grec.

La médaille Fields, quoique très réputée dans l'univers des mathématiciens, n'est pas vraiment connue du grand public. Depuis 2003 est décerné le Prix Abel, du nom du célèbre mathématicien norvégien. Avec un nom très proche de Nobel, un lauréat tous les ans qui est consacré pour toute sa carrière, les mathématiciens espèrent que ce prix saura définitivement s'imposer même aux yeux des médias.
