Henri Cartan (8 juillet 1904 [Nancy] - 13 aout 2008 [Paris])

Henri Cartan est un des plus grands mathématiciens français du XXè siècle, l'un des plus influents aussi. Fils d'un autre brillant mathématicien, Elie Cartan, il intègre l'Ecole Normale Supérieure en 1923. Il obtient son doctorat en 1928, sous la direction de Paul Montel. Après une année d'enseignement dans un lycée à Caen, il rejoint l'université de Lille, puis, en 1931, celle de Strasbourg. Un temps délocalisé à Clermont-Ferrand, où l'université alsacienne s'est réfugiée pendant la guerre, il devient professeur à la Sorbonne en 1940, où il est chargé jusqu'en 1965 de l'enseignement des mathématiques à l'Ecole Normale Supérieure. Il termine sa carrière à l'université d'Orsay, de 1969 à 1975.

L'oeuvre mathématique de Cartan concerne essentiellement trois domaines :

  1. l'analyse complexe, depuis sa thèse jusqu'à l'utilisation intensive de la théorie des faisceaux mise au point par Jean Leray en 1950.
  2. la topologie algébrique.
  3. l'algèbre homologique, dont il est le fondateur avec Samuel Eilenberg, qui crée de nouveaux outils algébriques à utiliser en analyse.
Pour ces travaux, il a reçu le prestigieux prix Wolf en 1980, alors qu'il était déjà membre de l'Académie des Sciences depuis 1974 et médaille d'or du CNRS en 1976.

Henri Cartan est également une figure mathématique importante du XXè siècle en raison de l'influence qu'il eut. D'abord, il fut le directeur de thèse de nombreux grands mathématiciens, comme les médailles Fields Jean-Pierre Serre et Réné Thom. Ensuite, le "séminaire Cartan" qu'il anima pendant 15 ans à l'Ecole Normale Supérieure forma plusieurs générations de mathématiciens. Enfin, l'histoire de Cartan est indissociable de celle de Nicolas Bourbaki, ce groupe de mathématiciens français, qui, en 1935, décida de remettre à plat toutes les mathématiques.

Henri Cartan était aussi un homme engagé. Militant des droits de l'homme, il entreprend de défendre les mathématiciens étrangers persécutés par leur gouvernement. Européen convaincu, il milite pour les "Etats-Unis" d'Europe, et conduit même en 1984 une liste aux élections européennes (qui récolte moins de 1% des suffrages).

Un très beau film d'entretiens, Henri Cartan, une vie de mathématicien, a été réalisé par Isabelle Broué en 1995.
